About Carol Forman
January 26, 2011
You could say Carol was destined to be a photographer from birth. Her father, Jerome was the Forman half of Forman/Shoemaker Photography , one of the most celebrated event photography studios in the entire Delaware Valley.
At an early age Carol went to work snapping images of friends and classmates with a Kodak Instamatic 110. Family functions were no different as she delighted in the reactions she received when covering birthday parties and family holiday gatherings. Maybe that’s why Carol says, “photography has never felt like work. “ Whether shooting a wedding in Center City, a Bar/Bat Mitzvah on the Main Line, or a beach portrait down the Jersey Shore, Carol receives the same rave reviews from her clients that she received from her family. “I guess you could say my photography style combines the skills and traditions my father taught me with my own perspective on people at important moments and events in their lives.”
While one might assume Carol is following in her fathers’ footsteps, the path she’s taken to opening her own photography studio could hardly be considered conventional. Sure she worked many hours in her dad’s Philadelphia photography studio ,while simultaneously studying film and art in college. But when a friend told Carol about a program now known as the “Maine Media Workshops”, she headed off to Rockport and enrolled in the intensive summer Photography program. This was a place where film makers, photographers and artists could refine their skills under the tutelage of established and well known names in their field. Photographers, Film Makers, Inventors such as: Joyce Tennyson , Julia Tucker, Jerry Hirshfeld, Mary Ellen Mark ,and Garrett Brown all had a hands on role in helping shape Carols “voice” as an artist.
While studying photography, Carol made friends with many other students in the film production classes. Not surprisingly, she found the highly social and collaborative culture of the film industry to her liking and began taking film production workshops as well. After a year, Carol packed her bags and headed to New York City to work in the film industry.
For 3 years Carol worked non- stop on independent films, music videos, industrial films and commercials. But she never stopped practicing her love of photography. Always growing as an artist Carol felt the time was right to open her own photography studio.
Carol Forman Photography is located in South Philadelphia, but her unique talents have been in demand all over the Philadelphia area. Whether shooting weddings, mitzvahs, portraits or corporate events Carol’s passion and unique vision are evidenced in every image she takes. “I’m one of the lucky ones…. they say if you can find something you love to do and get paid for it, you’ll never work a day in your life”
